How to Have Fun With Twitter [How to be Messy]

I know you know someone [and you might even be one of these people yourself] that "doesn't like twitter" because "it's useless."  And to those people I would say, "Are you sure we're talking about the same social media network???"

Twitter is more that just the status update part of facebook. It can be so much more than just a bunch of people telling other people where they are, what they are doing and how they are feeling.  I mean, who really cares about that?

No, you have to find your niche in Twitter and then you have to work it like it's your full time job, and I'm here to help you figure it all out :D

------------------

First,  we have to find something that you're interested in.  Let's say that you're sitting down on a Tuesday night and watching Fox.  Glee is on, and you want to talk to someone about it as the show is going.  Well, long ago in 2001 you would have called your friends on the phone during the commercials to talk about how horrible the music is and how much you can't stand Glee because it's just too fake.  Not today!  Now you can search for other people who are talking about Glee and tweet to them!  Don't worry, the Twitter community is pretty open and diverse and as long as you're talking to a random person about the thing that they're talking about, friendships can be formed, and you won't be viewed as completely weird.

So, we've decided, you're going to look for people who are talking about Glee.  But where are you going to search?   HOW do you search Twitter?

This is the part that a lot of people don't know about!  Search dot Twitter dot Com!  Yay!

So, just in case you didn't realize that I was typing out the URL above this picture, let me put the link here:

http://search.twitter.com

So to Twitter Search and type in #glee and then search.
[Side Note:  I don't know why the pound sign [#] has been designated the universal tag symbol, but it is, so when you want to search for ANY thing on Twitter, put a # sign in front.  Examples:  #glee, #CNN, #apples]

Apparently, Glee comes on at 12 Noon CST in some spanish speaking country [could be Portugese, I dunno].  Because all of the search results right now are in a different language..............

But yeah, you would search for the show that you want to talk about DURING the show.  Then, when you find people that are saying something that you like [or don't like] you can @reply them and let the conversation ensue!

This is how I have met many of the people that I follow on Twitter.  My two main "Talk about on Twitter" shows are "Hell's Kitchen" and "The A List:  New York."

Being Messy on Twitter
Additionally, search dot twitter dot com can be used to search for more than just trending topics with the # sign.  You can also search for @replies to certain users.  Say your boyfriend is on twitter and you want to see WHO is @replying him, just search for "@yourboyfriendsnamehere and all communications going TO him will come up in the results.  This only works if the person tweeting to him has his/her settings on public, not private.

Give it a try, you'll have fun with Twitter, I promise.
